» DO INFJS HAVE A RICH SET OF CAREER CHOICES TO CHOOSE FROM?

It can be very difficult to know what the best career choice is for an INFJ. Part of the reason for this is because other types tell us what we ought to do and the career guidance we should follow. However, this doesn't mean that those career options are the best ones for an INFJ.

When I was at school and about to go to university the school wanted me to study history. I loathed history. I'm no good on historical details. What I'm good at is analysis and comparative analysis of trends. This meant that when I took my school history exams I came top of the school.

However, going to university to study history would have destroyed my inner spirit.

What careers are INFJs supposed to be good at?

When I look at the career advice online for INFJs, top of the list is nearly always something to do with people. Yes, people-based careers are of paramount importance to most INFJs.

However, it is vital that we don't trap ourselves into thinking we must only do one type of career. This is wrong and squashes the creative, imaginative talents that an INFJ may have.

It is because of the broad ranging skill set that many INFJs possess that we can have an abundance of career options.

» WHAT IS THE BEST INFJ CAREER ADVICE TO FOLLOW?

One of the most important aspects of choosing the right career for you, as an INFJ, is to know what you are good at. Have you ever thought of monitoring yourself to find out when you get energised and when you get depleted?

If you know yourself well, understand where your talents lie and when you get a buzz out of doing certain tasks and activities, this can guide you to your best career.

Each INFJ has individual differences that will influence his or her ideal career choice.

The career options that are typical for INFJs.

You probably already know the list of career options. It's quite long for INFJs but it is limited. We are more than the career choices listed on the online forums.

However, a counsellor or psychologist is often cited as a natural fit for the INFJ personality type. This applies to me. I have helped people throughout my career and still do.

However, how I work with people and the context in which I work with them varies.

» INFJS DO NOT NEED TO BE LIMITED IN THEIR CAREER CHOICE.

One of the career choices that you may never have considered is that of a scientist. One of the world's most famous scientists was an INFJ.

I also know INFJs who are CEOs, who are writers, who are academics, who are graphic designers. In all truth, there is an extensive list.

In the end, what matters is not only what career is chosen but how, as individuals, we find meaning and purpose in that career.

Planet INFJ: The Book

How can you know which is the right career for your INFJ personality?

"Planet INFJ" is determined to show INFJs how they can be their best in their careers, work roles or jobs. It does not limit them to only one job or only one way of being. Rather, it aims to inspire them to consider many different career choices and excel in them.

  1. "Planet INFJ" covers the topic of careers for INFJs. A range of different INFJ Insight writers describe a broad scope of successful careers. For example, Geoff describes how he followed a winding career path to become a successful CEO. Jeremy, in another chapter, talks about how he started off choosing the wrong career path and how, only now in his 40s, he's chosen a far better career. "Planet INFJ" will inspire INFJs the world over to choose the career that suits them rather than simply following the advice of other types who don't fully understand our gifts.
  2. There is so much in "Planet INFJ" that can help INFJs to be fulfilled in their careers that it's impossible in a short couple of paragraphs to identify all that is relevant. However, the whole of Chapter 11 is devoted to how INFJs can avoid the pitfalls of poor career selection. Two of the Insight writers also explain the kinds of careers they're successful in, including April who is a medical doctor, and Jen who is a counsellor. We even have an INFJ sexologist in the book. "Planet INFJ" is here to help you find the right career choice, not to limit your career choice.
  3. It is through a depth of self-understanding and self-acceptance that the right career can become obvious to all of us as INFJs.
